May Day is fast approaching. Celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1st. Gather at 11:30 am at Tipton Park (108 St & 81 Ave) and march to MacIntyre (Gazebo) Park at Noon.

On Saturday, May 8th, Fellow Worker Guy Smith is perfoming in the Mayweek Festival’s Labour Cabaret at the Westmount Community League (10970 127th Street). Doors open at 7 pm Music at 7:30 pm. Tickets $10 at the door.

The branch will be holding a forum on ÒGlobal Labour Struggles in the Age of EmpireÒ at the Alberta Social Forum. It will take place on Saturday, October 19th at 3:00 p.m. Check the Alberta Social Forum web page for more information.

The IWW literature table will be at the Alberta Social Forum on October 18-20 and the Anarchist Bookfair on October 24-26. Contact the branch for more information.

The IWW Edmonton Branch is co-sponsoring an exhibition of The Emma Goldman Papers. The papers will be on display in the University of Alberta's Rutherford Library during the month of May, 2003. The exhibition will co-inside with the Edmonton Mayweek Labour and Arts Festival and the Culture and the State conference at the U of A from May 2-5. More information TBA.

The Edmonton Branch of the IWW is part of the Edmonton Coalition Against War and Racism. Please attend the Global Day of Action Against War on Iraq on Saturday, February 15th. Meet in at 1 p.m. at Churchill Square for a rally and march in downtown Edmonton.

UFCW Local 401 has finally defeated EDE in the long bitter strike at the Shaw Conference Centre. Congratulations to all our fellow workers in Local 401!

There is exciting news from two local Wobbly artists. Fellow Worker Tommie Gallie's show "Pressure Treated" will be showing at Great Bear Framing (11631-105 Avenue) from November 2nd until November 29th. The show will feature new sculptures by Tommie. FW Guy Smith is releasing his first CD, "Red Square Dance" which includes "Original songs of poignant observations of struggle, love and life, ranging from gritty political folk ballads to catchy pop songs." Guy is having a CD Release Part on Saturday November 9th (doors at 7pm) at Riverdale Hall (9231-100ave). Admission - $10 / Admission and CD - $20. The Alberta Labour History Institute invites you to attend the second annual Edmonton Labour History Day on Thursday August 1 from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. at Stanley A. Milner Library (Downtown), Lower Level, Edmonton Room and Theatre.

1:00 - Kick-off / Media presentation- Edmonton Room. A tour of photographs, and displays of historic items celebrating the working people of Edmonton. 2002 is the Centennial of the founding of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Union of Edmonton.

1:30 - 1932 Hunger Strike Walking Tour- in 1932 10,000 unemployed workers and farmers challenged the government to come up with relief and were met with police batons.

2:00 - Labour's Role in the founding of the Alberta New Democrats- 40 years of the New Democrats and the union movement in Alberta. Discussion and presentation by trade unionists who were founding members of the Alberta New Democrats.

4:00 - The Impact of McCarthyism on Working People in Alberta- Red baiting and anti-communism sent a chill through the union and progressive movements in Canada and the United States. A discussion of its impact by trade unionists and activists who were affected by McCarthyism and anti-communism in Alberta.

7:30 - Maria Dunn in Concert (suggested donation $5.00)- Theatre. Maria and her band will celebrate the heritage of working people in song.

Also during the day: ALHI wants your stories. During the day ALHI will be video taping interviews on the history of working people in Edmonton.

As of May 3rd, Shaw Conference Centre workers, represented by UFCW Local 401, are on strike. Issues include classifying part-time workers who work full-time hours as full-time staff entitled to benefits, assigning shifts by seniority and contracting out work. Our demonstration at the Alberta Tory Convention on Friday was a success. Close to 100 "party poopers" attended. The Edmonton Sun's coverage of the event is available on our PRESS page.

The IWW Edmonton GMB is calling for a protest at the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party 2002 Convention & AGM at Shaw Conference Centre, 5 PM Friday March 22 in Edmonton. The press release is available on our PRESS page.

Spanish Civil War Monument Committee: The Edmonton IWW has set up a committee to build a monument in Edmonton for Albertans who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. This is intended to be a broad based coalition of individuals and groups. Several meetings have already taken place and close to $1000 has been raised. If you would like to help out, or would like more information, please contact the branch.

Alberta Labour History Day - August 1, 2001: On Wednesday, August 1, the branch's literature table will be set up at the Stanley A. Milner Library downtown. Leonard Peltier Awareness Month: The IWW Edmonton GMB, in conjunction with the Woodsworth-Irvine Socialist Fellowship, Peoples Action Network, UFCW Local 401, the U of A Student Worker Action Group, and the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee in Canada is hosting a teach-in and rally for imprisoned native rights activist Leonard Peltier.
The teach-in in on Saturday, June 23 from 1-5 p.m. at the International Centre (172 HUB Mall, University of Alberta). As well as providing information on Leonard's current situation we will also be discussing the common struggle of native, labour and political activists against police and state repression.It will feature Professor Anthony Hall, Malcolm Azania, Linda Bull, and Barry Chivers. Other speakers TBA. There will be a video screening and refreshments. This is a FREE event
On Tuesday, June 26 there will be a rally at Justice Minister Anne McLellan's Constituency Office (12304-107 Ave) at 5p.m.

May 22, 2001: IWW Edmonton GMB issued a press release on the Alberta Government's "right to work" motion. The motion urges the government "to ensure employees are not forced to join labour unions in order to secure employment in either the private or public sector." Click HERE to read the press release.
