Organizer Training 101

This is the 2012 edition of the Edmonton IWW’s annual Organizer Training course.

This is a two day course on building power in your workplace from the bottom up. It focuses on techniques for building a committee of workers who are confident and capable of addressing issues in the workplace, and for overcoming obstacles like worker apathy, anxiety, and the bosses’ counter-organizing efforts.

The course is free, and is open to everyone – so please forward to anyone who might be interested!

We’re starting at 9am on Saturday the 28th and 10am on Sunday the 29th. There will be a social event Saturday night, and our guest trainer will be doing a speaking event on Friday night.

The location will be announced when it’s finalized, but it will likely be on the University of Alberta campus.

Food will be provided, and child care will be provided if required.

The Edmonton IWW Propaganda/Education Committee and the Alberta Public Interest Research Group are pleased to announce this year’s fall Organiser Training 101!

The IWW’s Organiser Training is an intensive, hands-on, two day workshop where
participants learn basic tools needed to successfully organize
their workplaces to collectively and directly address workplace issues.

These tools are taught through role plays, group facilitated discussion, and
interactive lectures. Topics include: gathering contact information, approaching
co-workers, building an organizing committee, and legal issues relevant to
workers who participate in workplace organizing.

OT 101 is a great space to learn new skills and practice those you
already have! Breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided.
If you need child care, that can be arranged, just please tell us in advance.

Besides the training itself, we are trying to arrange a speaker for the
Friday night, and Friday/Saturday generally have IWW social events in
the evening as well.

Announcing the Canadian Regional Organising Summit.
On the Weekend of May 28th and 29th the Edmonton branch of the
Industrial Workers of the World will host the Canadian Regional
Organising Summit. This will be a weekend of skill sharing, networking
and strategy building for the Canadian region. Topics of discussion
will include: organizing in the hospitality industry; building the
CANROC; direct action casework models of organizing; dual card
organizing at the post office; and many other subjects. If you have
any topics you would like to have included please register early!

The Edmonton branch of the Industrial Workers of the World and the
Alberta Public Interest Research Group are pleased to announce the
followup to its 101 Organiser Training: OT 102.

The IWW Organiser Training 101 that we ran in February taught
participants the basic tools needed to successfully organize their
workplaces so that they can collectively and directly address
workplace issues. This training continues where the 101 training
leaves off. In it organizers will discuss what an organizing committee
does, how to make it effective, and how to keep it growing.

One of our co-trainers for the weekend is Erik Forman, a Minneapolis
IWW organiser of many campaigns (see Starbucks Workers Union @ Mall of
America, and Jimmy Johns Workers Union)

The training takes place April 9 and 10 on the University of Alberta
campus. A lunch and light breakfast is provided.
